Garden Photo of the Day

A garden wedding in Alaska!

Photo/Illustration: courtesy of Barbara Miller

Today’s photos are from Barbara Miller in Alaska (state #46–YAY!!)

Barbara says, “This pic was taken at my son’s wedding, Dillon Miller to Calla Dexter, in my garden this past July 27th in Anchorage, Alaska. The garden was incredible this past summer because of a few weird climate conditions. Spring was two week late, then it was nice and warm. Plants that bloom early bloomed late and then the late ones bloomed early, making most of the garden come into bloom at the same time. I am a relocated horticulturist from Louisiana to Alaska, making the best of it. This area pictured is about 8 years old, filled with perennial then annuals added for the wedding. All the bouquets where made with flowers from the garden, and friends supplied live music and a surprise fire show.”

What a gorgeous setting for a wonderful occasion, Barbara! Your garden is a riot of color. More photos, please!

——Winter is the perfect time to take a photographic stroll through the photos you took in your garden this year……and then send some in to me at [email protected]!

So colorful! Do I see meconopsis sprinkled about? Someone needs to get busy and breed some heat-tolerant blue poppies.

Barbara, it looks like Mother Nature blessed your family with a picture perfect day for this wonderful occasion. The setting is pure enchantment. Those stunning pink peonies in the foreground are like additional flower girls in attendance. I'm sure their glorious fragrance will forever bring back special memories.

Alaska?! Such a beautiful setting for a wedding! I hav heard that you can grow huge vegies up there, too. Its sure a nice way to plant a side of a slope. Do you have trouble with moose and elk eating your plants? Sounds like dinner to me. Well happy gardening up there. Thanks for showing us!

    Hi Barbara,

What a change from the deep South to the far North! What is the soil like in Alaska? What is your palette of perennials? Your annuals look great. Are you inspired to use them again? I love to add annuals to my permanent plantings to have lots of summer color.

Wow! Looks looks like a professional landscaping project, lots of lush flowers, a great backdrop of towering conifers, intriguing architexture peeking out, and lots of sky... makes me want to see more, much more.

Who could not be happy there, amid such a joyful riot of colourful blossoms! Barbara, your son and his bride must have been thrilled to have your beautiful garden for their wedding venue. A day and a place to remember forever. Thank you for sharing!

I can't think of many things more nerve wracking for a gardener than a garden wedding with all of the impossible vagaries of weather to contend with not only just for the day but for the growing season just before. You must be an optimist!

Your landscaping is gorgeous and you and the happy couple were blessed with perfect weather leading up to and during the wedding.

Yeah, state number 46! We should have more garden wedding shots. They definitely are smile makers. (I got married in my garden, too.)You have done a wonderful job with your garden. The garden has responded with an over abundance of blooms, to make up for your short growing season. The lanterns you added are very festive.

Barbara, your Alaska garden is gorgeous! My husband and I honeymooned in Alaska and what I remember most is how Alaskans plant flowers in EVERYTHING that sits still for a few seconds: old boots, gas cans, cast off furniture, literally anything. Everything explodes with color during that short growing season I guess because of the long daylight hours. Thank you for sharing!

Absolutely spectacular. What a wonderful venue for your son and his new wife. Thanks for sharing. If you have more photos, please send them! (I could drool just a bit more).
