Garden Photo of the Day

Fairytale Rose Garden

Donna Jones creates a charming backyard escape with her climbing roses.

"In 1999 I planted a one gallon Jeanne LaJoie miniature climbing rose on each side of our deck.  Seventeen years later the display is so breathtaking.  I had a garden party to celebrate their beauty! With 10 white Iceberg roses and these two Jeanne Lajoie, I have all the flowers I need for a nice spring display! They take so little care and they bloom like crazy for at least a month and then off and on all summer!  Enjoy!"

Amazing effects with just two rose cultivars, Donna - less is more! Absolutely beautiful. Any black spot problems?

  4. hortiphila 06/13/2016

    So dreamy!

  5. diane_lasauce 06/13/2016

Wow, dreamy indeed! Bet you never leave home these days! ;-)
    Where do you garden Donna?

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

I live in Northern California... Roses love it here...in fact it's fairly easy to grow most everything here! Blessed!

  6. Vespasian 06/13/2016

    Absolutely gorgeous, love it!

  7. user-7007498 06/13/2016

Donna: what a lovely setting. It looks like pictures I would see from a magazine cover. You have pulled off a beautiful setting.

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

Thanks! I have great co- workers and wanted to do a little surprise luncheon for them...it worked!

Oh, my goodness, if anyone ever wondered if it's worth taking the time to plant something...this display of roses says it all. Do it and do it now. Imagine being surrounded by this kind of beauty of your very own. I think I will go to my of savings account of "S" words...your pictures are stunning, sensational, striking and spectacular...really, Donna, what a beautiful setting you have created. Thanks for the inspiration.

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

Gosh thanks! I figured others who love gardening might enjoy the roses but you all are so encouraging!

  9. NCYarden 06/13/2016

Exquisite display of roses. Love your stylish photos.

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

Thank you so much...I write a little educational garden blog and photograph a lot for that!

  10. user-4691082 06/13/2016

I don't see the iceberg roses-am I just blind? It's all beautiful. Can you send some photos farther out? I would love to see those arbors in context. Can you invite us all for next years garden party? LOL!

    1. frankgreenhalgh 06/13/2016

Good idea Rhonda - that table setting looks very elegant and inviting. Come on Donna, be a good sport!

      1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

Hey come on over! We could have a "Fine Gardening " fan party!

    2. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

Oh sorry...forgot I used Iceberg for table decor. I love them so I have 10 bushes in the front yard...they didn't show here:) It's just a plain deck cover with 2x2's attached for shade!

  11. wGardens 06/13/2016

I surely can see why you are proud of that spectacular display! Thanks for sharing!

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

  13. christianelena 06/13/2016

Amazing pergola & poarch with gorgeous climbling roses! Perfect

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

My husband built the deck cover over 15 years ago... I just keep touching up the paint and letting the roses
      grow on it!

      Thanks!

  15. greengenes 06/13/2016

Roses and more roses! Lovely and romantic for sure! This is very worth the wait of 16 years. Hope they have a great smell! Thanks for sharing, Donna.

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

Oh they do have a nice rose scent! With the classicall music we play for the garden party and the scent it really is lovely!

  16. sheila_schultz 06/13/2016

Your photos are like illustrations from a fairy tale, Donna...very charming. Are the two place settings at the end of the table for Prince Charming and Cinderella?

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

      Thanks for the kind words!

  17. GrannyMay 06/13/2016

Gorgeous roses! Your breathtaking display shows how huge these miniature climbers can get when they are allowed to grow in a place that suits them. Well done!

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

I figured if I let them go they'd get bigger than pruned climber minus but this surprised me!

  18. nenitafranck 06/13/2016

I'm now at 1yr., so...I've got 16 yrs. to patiently wait??? I definitely want those roses in my garden. I just hope I'm lucky enough to have the perfect conditions as yours. Good job on your nurturing of roses......really, really, beautiful and real, not a fairy tale!
Can I trouble you for your secrets to success? Did you prune? fertilize? spray? Are those miniature roses the ones you buy in little pots at the supermarkets for $5.99??

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

These are not the ones in the stores..Google Jeanne Lajoie for speciality nurseries who carry it. I only prune out dead branches...feed twice in spring with Miracle Gro and make sure they have enough water... That's about it. One big bloom in April then sporadic blooms through the summer...They aren't hard! The mini roses in the supermarket never do well for me!

Enchantingly captivating. What a dreamy setting

Hi Donna, Jeanne LaJoie rose is hardly miniature in spirit. What a spectacular bloom! What kind of care does she require? I would be interested as I have had to remove all my climbers due to rose rosette disease and I will be replanting.

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

I have them on a automatic sprinkler every two to three days...Miracle grow once or twice in spring...that's about it!

My goodness no disease or insects problems? Are you in an enchanted land? Wish I could say the same, yearly have to deal with rose slug, Japenese beetles. Any rose that I try that has disease issue gets shovel pruned. So have mostly Bill Radler roses.

  21. jagardener 06/13/2016

Spectacular! Charming! I can hardly imagine that two plants could be so rewarding. One of the most outstanding postings so far.

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

Wow, thanks! I do love to plant and photograph flowers!

Hi Donna, you must really look forward to this display every year and I love the way you have "set the stage" to show off their beauty. Absolutely stunning! Thanks so much for sharing.

    1. DonnaJones 06/13/2016

You're welcome...I thought other gardeners would enjoy some roses!'

  23. VikkiVA 06/13/2016

My goodness this setting is breathtaking. While growing the Jeanne LaJoie may be carefree, it is obvious you have done a considerable amount of work to create a beautiful backdrop to enhance the blooms. Vikki in VA
