Diana’s garden in Ontario

Today’s photos are from Diana Bervoets in the Niagara region of Ontario. She says, “I am a self taught gardener. With the help of my husband we have built these gardens.

“Every garden was built on top of the sod–newspaper was laid over the sod and 14 inches of garden soil was laid on top of that. Then we watered and let the soil rest before planting. After planting we topped the soil with 5 inches of mulch. It was definitely a labour of love.

“Our garden is 98% perennials. We currently have more than 100 hostas throughout, some in pots but most in the garden beds. Tree peonies are one of my favorite blooming perennials along with the standard peonies. Flowering dogwoods flank the back of our gazebo, along with Koreanspice viburnum.

“Besides the beautiful show of flowers that these trees produce, they also offer privacy in our backyard. Beautiful trumpet vines, when in bloom, offer a great place for the hummingbirds to hang out. Several clematis bloom on trellises and obelisks in the yard as well as wisteria vines. Hanging out in the garden is one of our favorite things to do. Happy gardening this year.”

Diana, I LOVE your tasteful but big-impact ornaments! The tuteur, the dress form, and even that vintage bicycle I see hidden in the back. And I see lots of houses around you, but the garden feels so private. Wonderful!

Diane, a fabulous garden! So envious of your amazing hostas. I gave up on them after my first batch was devoured by snails!
Thank you for sharing your lovely garden and quite obviously a massive labour of love.

Well, Diana, let me add my voice to the Alleluia Chorus of "What heavenly hostas". Yours are amazing! They sure must have liked your approach of 14" of additional garden soil and thorough mulching. I love how the hostas are so big , they actually seem to give the beautiful peony blooms support.
    It's all very lovely.

What a pleasant, tidy and snug garden. Looks like a wonderful refuge to wile away a day and relax. And goodness - those hostas! Like the others who have commented, I don't bother much with them anymore here in NC, as there is an entire country of voles beneath my property. So I am pleased you get the opportunity to grow and enjoy them...and letting me momentarily enjoy them, if only vicariously. Thanx for inviting me into your garden.

Yes, your Hostas are fabulous. What a gread statement they make. And I love how you have been able to make such a private, cozy garden in a seemingly very urban area. Great work!

Beautiful and you've named most of my favorites. if you have coral bells and daffodils, I could move right in and not change a thing. We had to cut down an enormous cherry tree in our front yard this week and I have a feeling I am going to have a lot of fried hostas this summer...

A very lush garden, must be that added soil is magical.

Such lush and healthy hostas, peonies and other plants! Diana, your hard work up front, adding all that fresh soil and mulch has proven to be worth it. I'm so impressed with your beautiful privacy wall of dogwood! I'm also a big fan of tree peonies and wisteria and hope you will send photos of yours in bloom. Thanks for sharing!

I went to Ontario for the first time last year and Niagara Falls was on the list to tour. The Falls were breathtaking, but the public gardens were so exuberant, just like your garden Diana. Thank-you and to be honest I'm kind of envious.

    Diana,
Beautiful gardens. Love your hostas, peonies, dogwoods... It's a very peaceful place. I brought in a good soil mix when I started my beds; it helps immensely in keeping out the weeds. Thanks for sharing and would love to see the trumpet vine, clematis, and wisteria in bloom too.

Diana, what a stunning display of hostas, and their white margins are highlighted so cleverly with the daisies. And that dogwood! It's so beautiful (another of my coveted plants that we're just one zone shy of here in Montana!) and looks so healthy. And thank you for that little peek into your patio. It looks very inviting.

I don't usually comment on peoples' lawn, but yours is so lush, lovely, green and weed free. What a cozy spot you have created!
