Fine Gardening’s January/February 2018 cover story will feature the display beds at Singing Tree Gardens Nursery in McKinleyville, California. This beautiful spot is about 300 miles north of San Francisco, a few miles inland from the Pacific coast. Here are a few extra photos that we couldn’t fit into the magazine feature.

‘Hupp’s Single Snake’ noble fir (Abies procera, Zones 5-9) produces terminal leaders that shoot straight up with very few side branches. The dark-leaved shrub on the right is Red Jewel barberry (Berberis x media ‘Red Jewel’, Zones 6-9)

Silky wisps of Mexican feather grass catch the breezes, giving this part of the garden a distinctly different vibe. ‘Garnet’ Japanese maple (Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Garnet’, Zones 5-9) and Himalayan birch (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii, Zones 5-9) complete the scene.

Beautiful textures, left to right: ‘Golden Fern’ Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Golden Fern', Zones 5-8), ‘Van Ness Sensation’ rhododendron (Zones 7-9), and ‘Thorson’s Weeping’ Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla 'Thorsen's Weeping', Zones 6-8).

'Preziosa' hydrangea (Hydrangea ‘Preziosa’, Zones 6-9) has flowers that start out a creamy beige, then turn to shades of pink, then red, blue, and even bronze. Golden-leaved hardy fuscia (Fuchsia magellanica var. gracilis ‘Aurea’, Zones 7-9) adds another bright note to the mix.

Here’s the golden-leaved hardy fuchsia again, this time with ‘Tokyo Delight’ hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Tokyo Delight', Zones 5-9).
