Today’s winter-themed photo is from Victoria Coates in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She says, “I have been amazed by the ongoing beauty of this asparagus fern.  It had a hearty run this summer but is just as beautiful in winter, especially in the snow we’ve been getting, so I thought I would send it along.” Beautiful, Victoria! Thanks for sharing. Asparagus ferns (Asparagus densiflorus, USDA Hardiness Zone 11) are so versatile. They look great both as houseplants and in outdoor containers. Now you’ve proven that they make great winter accents, too, even though you have to sacrifice the plant for the look.

Welcome to the Fine Gardening GARDEN PHOTO OF THE DAY blog! Every weekday we post a new photo of a great garden, a spectacular plant, a stunning plant combination, or any number of other subjects. Think of it as your morning jolt of green.

This is really lovely and a great idea. Looks like lace.

Thats a great idea. I have a large plant that has been repotted and grown over several years. I then bring it inside. However, it is very heavy and sheds quite a bit. Maybe I will divide some of it next Spring for other pots and then leave the big remainder outside for the Winter look.

That is a beautiful photo, do hope it comes back. Don't you just love the asparagus ferns? It does look like feathery lace. Make a good framed picture that someone who is into pastels could use.

I have the same thing! Unexpectedly beautiful. It was a lush asparagus fern that, along with one datura, I didn't bring in before there was a killing frost. The datura is now covered in Xmas lights and the pot that the fern was in cracked, so I just left it and it's covered with snow, looking so wonderfully scultural...isn't it great when something unexpected like that happens?

I, too, love this as a winter plant!! I'm going to put large hanging pots of this on my huge deck this summer instead of the regular expensive ferns! Then, when winter comes, I'll have everlasting beauty through the year! I look out my french doors now and see into my garden where I have a pot of asparagus fern hanging, looking lovely, surrounded by snowcapped plants. Beauty can be a 4-season affair!!

Love the dusting of snow on the fronds... and the color compliments the color of the mortar between the stones on your house.
