Holiday Decor Ideas From the Garden

Thanks to Laurel Magrini from the Leonard J. Buck Garden, in Far Hills, New Jersey, for sharing some beautiful holiday decor ideas!

“Here are some holiday ornaments and decorations made by the staff of Somerset County Park Commission, Leonard J. Buck Garden in Far Hills, NJ. The mason jar candles adorned our holiday party table. They were made by the  Interpretive Gardener, Tricia Scibilia. She filled the jars with water and cuttings of variegated ivy, winterberry, ferns, and pine needles. Each one has a raffia bow and is topped with a gold floating tealight candle. The centerpiece of freshly cut Buck Garden foliage, arranged by gardener Kathleen Podgalsky, included some hellebores (Helleborus niger) which were in full bloom. They truly live up to the name, ‘Christmas Rose’.“

The imagination you folks display on this site every morning is boundless. I have mason jars in the basement & these plants outside & would have never thought to combine them like this... Discovering this site was a lucky break & all of you have brightened my mornings ever since. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all of you. Good luck ,Joe

I love this idea and I'm like Joe..."Duh"...why haven't I ever thought to do this. It is so charming and homey.

I never thought of using helleborus for decorations! It's a nice textural difference to add in! I'll go snip a few this morning to add to my pots. Thanks!!!

It's great when the hellebores are blooming so early. This warm December has really helped.

How lovely....and timely! Perfect for a Christmas table. I just received a hostess gift using a similar concept: slices of lemons and limes, cinnamon sticks, cloves, cranberries, juniper branches and berries in a small mason jar filled with water, capped and tied with a ribbon. Open the jar, pour into a pot, add a little water and let simmer....your house will smell like Christmas!

I used to do this all the time, but for some reason the idea fell off my radar. Thanks for the reminder Kielian, my house is not only going to look like Christmas, but it's going to smell like Christmas, too!!! HoHoHo ;)

I love this idea and I'm going to do it even though Christmas is past. I want my house to smell good regardless!

Though now having only an indoor– though pleasurable– garden (see March 18, 2015 story) I have been avidly enjoying all the comments, garden views, sweat and tears, joy and creativity of all of you great dirt gardeners, and wishing I could still have grounds to grub in. So to all of you, Granny May, Jesse, meander, Joe, Tim, HellofromMD, GrannyCC, Jeff, Sheila and everyone, thank you, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and may the Life Force be with you!
