All painted fern varieties have broad silvery leaves, but ‘Ursula’s Red’ differs in that the centers of its leaves have a wide, showy burgundy band in spring. Spreading from rhizomes, it quickly doubles its size in one growing season. Though deer do like it, it can quickly produce more fronds and may show no lasting ill effects.

Blue grama is a perennial grass from the Americas bearing unusually bent and flattened inflorescences. Being native to open grasslands, they are drought tolerant and at home in meadows. They provide the garden with shades of tan that persist throughout winter.

‘Autumn Bride’ is one of the best cultivars of the species H. villosa. The large, fuzzy, gray-green leaves set this one apart from all of the others. The midsummer white flowers are also attractive. This heuchera is tolerant of full sun but prefers partial shade, especially in the afternoon.

It’s small, yes, but this plant is nothing if not bold. The high contrast between the silvery body of the leaves and their green veins makes ‘Hermann’s Pride’ stand out even among bright flowers. Blooming in late spring, the pure yellow of the small flowers makes it even more eye-catching. While some have trouble controlling this cultivar, it behaves meekly in harsh climates.

Unlike the rampantly creeping variegated yellow lamium (Lamium galeobdolon 'Variegatum'), the lamium cultivar ‘Hermann’s Pride’ is a slow-growing, clump-forming treasure that grows like a small bush, beautiful in foliage and flower. Ever-fresh leaves are jagged edged and etched with silver. Masses of bright, yellow-lipped flowers complement the foliage in late spring to early summer.

In early spring, the fleshy stems of ‘Britt Marie Crawford’ ligularia unfurl and are topped by rounded burgundy leaves. By June, it reaches full-foliage splendor, with upturned leaves resembling glossy bowls and rich purple undersides. While this gem may wilt in the hot noonday sun, soft shade will soon revive it. At the start of summer, bright golden daisies appear, providing a bold contrast.

Many cultivars of Plectranthus are popular in our local gardens. Though they are grown mostly for their interesting and beautiful foliage, some gardeners grow them for their blooms. The plants are easy and undemanding, and thrive in light to deep shade. One of the best varieties is ‘Mona Lavender’, which has beautiful, dark green leaves with purple undersides and stems, as well as abundant lavender-purple flowers.

This deciduous azalea has dark green leaves and funnel-shaped white flowers suffused with pink. The flowers have a spicy, sweet fragrance. This plant blooms very late in the season, and sporadically throughout the summer. Cultivars include 'Delaware Blue’, ‘Pink and Sweet’, 'Lemon Drop’, 'Parade’, and ‘Lollipop’.

Cooks and gardeners alike are indebted to this evergreen perennial for the unique, pungent flavor and aroma that its gray-green leaves produce. This cultivar has leaves suffused with steely-gray purple. It forms a 1.5-foot-tall and wide bush with woody stems that may be trimmed back to newly emerging growth or strong stems in spring. In early to mid-summer, it sends up lavender-purple flower spikes; it has both ornamental and culinary qualities in an herb garden. It tolerates alkaline soils, but cannot survive wet winter conditions.

Creeping myrtle has a reputation for being a tough evergreen ground cover for shade that will grow in almost any soil. Though the leaves of the species are a shiny dark green, the leaves of ‘Illumination’ are vividly splashed with a bright gold color. The 1-inch-wide periwinkle blue flowers that open against the brilliant foliage are a bonus. This plant makes for a striking ground-hugging mat and is also spectacular in hanging baskets.
