Glorious Camellias

Flowers of one of the most beautiful shrubs in the world

Camellia japonica 'Irrational Exuberance'

Mike Chelednik is a great lover of camellias, and sent in a selection of some of his favorites of this incredibly beautiful winter-flowering shrub. Though not suitable for colder zones, every garden in zones 7 or warmer needs some camellias to bring their beauty to the wintery part of the year.

Camellia japonica ‘Sunny Side’

Camellia japonica ‘Lois Coker’
Camellia japonica ‘Dona Herzilia de Freitas Magalhães’
Camellia x ‘Yume’
Camellia japonica ‘Miss Biloxi’
Camellia japonica ‘Merry Christmas’
Camellia x ‘Joe Nuccio’
Camellia sasanqua ‘Slim ‘n Trim’

You certainly grow a wonderful range of camellia varieties, Mike....from the sumptuous to the simple. As a non Camilla grower, I tend to compare the different flower forms to something I am more familiar with...like, oh, that one reminds me of a rose or a peony but, duh, they are all glorious camellias and not mere imitators of something else. Thanks for sharing your winter flowering jewels.

We just had our camellia show about a month ago here locally. Yours are really nice & the blooms are so clean & well formed. I have only 2 plus a Camellia sinensis.

Mike lovely camellia japonicas and sole sasanqua. The sasanqua threw me for a moment as I knew they bloomed in the fall where as the japonicas bloom winter to spring. I especially like the Irrational Exuberance and the Lois Coker. Do you exhibit in garden shows?

All wonderful. The "Joe Nuccio" really caught my eye.

Mike, you have given us a stunning display of your camellias- so glad you gave us such variety. Lois Coker is my favorite - and the angle of the photo of it really accentuates the great geometry of it! Thanks for sharing, and thank you, Joseph for showing us such a profusion of photos!

Mr. MIKE! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO US! Now i will have to make more room for some of these! They are all so beautiful! I especially like the Dona one...never seen that one before! They are such a great shrub/ tree being evergreen. Thanks for brightening up the morning!

Oh my! Simply gorgeous Mike. Thanks for sharing. The Irrational Exuberance, which drew me in is everything. Used to have three camellias but lost them in the polar vortex here in Nova. Good reminder to put some in the new garden. Have you tried espaliering any?
