Orchid Extravaganza

Beat the winter blues with orchids

This arch covered with yellow and white Phalaenopsis orchids is your first view as you walk into the Conservatory.

One of the best ways to get through the winter is to take a trip to a conservatory… Kevin Kelly did, and shared some pictures with us.

“I attended the Orchid Extravaganza at Longwood Gardens last weekend. Longwood grows 8,000 orchids to be able to supply great looking specimens for the display. Here are some photos you might enjoy.”

This display is in the lobby where you get your tickets.

A beautiful orange Masdevallia.

A dramatic Paphiopedilum lady’s slipper orchids shows off behind a bromeliad.

The intricately shaped blooms of Brassocatleya ‘Yellow Bird’.

If you want to see photos from last year, including bonus photos in the comments, check out Orchid Highlights from Longwood Gardens on GPOD. Today that link is active below in Related Articles.

I will be posting additional orchid photos later tonight on the Facebook Page "Shared Garden Visions". Everyone is welcome to stop over there to fight the winter blues.

I have my tickets already for March 1. Thanks so much for whetting my appetite! It looks like a fantastic display, as usual.

Oh, my, that cluster of the lady’s slipper orchid faces really tickled my fancy....it looked like a group of adorable aliens wanting to be adopted. It had to be sheer heaven to breathe in that warm humid air and see such wondrous sights.

Gorgeous, Kevin. The arch lined entrance is quite stunning. I like Michaele's description of the lady's slippers. Made me smile as I remember the funny running commentary from your posting last year. The orange Masdevallia is so different from other orchids, love it.

Last year's comments section was a real hoot...especially with NCYarden adding his very entertaining photoshop contribution to the discussion.

Amazing display. Some serious effort must go into this. Thanks for sharing, Kevin.

Kevin, as usual, your photography is stunning. I'm with Michaele on going head-over-heels for the ladyslipper orchid - though her description is far more apt than what I might have come up with! These were just a teaser - I know you took more, so I'll satisfy myself by heading over to last year's conversation~

Great photos, Kevin! Mother nature is playing snow catch up with us in the Midwest. Had little earlier in the season but a foot in the last week. Seeing the beautiful orchids helps me forget for a while that it really is still winter.

Great post this morning, Kevin. As Michaele said, you can almost feel the nice warm air. Can’t wait to check out your other photos.

Impressive Kevin! Too bad they weren’t more photos I drool over orchids. I’ll check out the Facebook page later… Lily J.
